Claims to Latvian Constitutional Court
In 2023, we won a case on academic freedom at universities in the Constitutional Court of Latvia. I am convinced that in the field of education not only sufficient public funding is needed, but also legally guaranteed freedoms. Many questions remain about school education. In a democratic society, the obligation of school education is justified only by freedom within the educational process.
With the development of technology, not only the methods of human activity change, but also the means of state management and control. Bypassing established legal institutions, new forms of state control emerge without effective ways to protect the rights of individuals or enterprises. We help develop protection strategies in non-standard situations.
Migration issues are becoming even more relevant for Latvia, while the legal framework remains underdeveloped.
There are common standards and jurisprudence of EU, but efforts must be made to apply them in Latvia for the defence of individual rights. In 2024, I represented applicants in a constitutional case regarding the mass annulment of permanent residence permits for citizens of the Russian Federation who were previously non-citizens of Latvia. Although we lost the case, during the proceedings, changes to the contested regulation were achieved - the legislator changed the law twice, allowing many people to find a solution to their situation.
